Standard plain glass typically comes in various thicknesses, commonly ranging from 2mm to 19mm, with 4mm to 6mm being the most common for residential use. The thickness depends on the specific application:

  • 10mm – 19mm: Commercial glass partitions, larger windows, or architectural uses.
Standard plain glass allows for 80% to 90% light transmission, making it ideal for maximizing natural light in spaces. However, it has relatively low thermal insulation properties, which means it can conduct heat and cold, potentially affecting energy efficiency. For improved insulation, double glazing or thermal coatings are often recommended.
Although plain glass is fragile compared to tempered or laminated glass, it offers decent strength and durability for general-purpose applications. It can withstand environmental factors like wind, rain, and moderate temperature changes.
Plain glass also offers minimal sound insulation on its own. To enhance soundproofing, it can be used in combination with thicker panes, laminated glass, or as part of double-glazed units.

For areas requiring safety, plain glass can be upgraded to tempered glass or laminated glass, which are safer alternatives. Laminated glass has an interlayer that holds broken glass fragments together, reducing the risk of injury.
